Rupak began to learn tabla under the guidance of his father. From his father, he received in-depth exposure to the aesthetics of tabla accompaniment for a large number of vocal forms like thumri, dadra, bhajan, bhavgeet, khayal and natyasangeet. He received his later training from the legendary Pandit Bhai Gaitonde.
