Neha Chimmalgi is a talented vocalist in the field of North Indian Music. Born in a musically cultured family, it was but natural that the gene was passed into her and she took to music at a very early age. Her initial training in Hindustani Classical Music was under Smt Zareen Mirza and Smt Shashikala Kainkini of the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan, where she passed her Sangeet Visharad with distinction. She also learnt under Shri Chandrashekhar Swami of Mewati Gharana for a while. She is married to reputed vocalist Sanjeev Chimmalgi and also takes lessons from him.
Though Neha had learnt the basics of Classical Music, her heart was in exploring the world of Semi-Classical Music. Soon she been a humble disciple of Thumri doyenne late Smt Shobha Gurtu. For the last several years she has been learning finer points of Thumri as well as Ghazal under her Guru. Blessed with a sonorous and intoxicating voice and a fine knack of expressive singing Neha is today a promising prospect on the musical horizon. |

Neha has performed quite a bit accompanying her Guru as well as performing on her own. She has given many solo performances, the most notable amongst which include Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Yadgaar Sabha, Young Artiste Festival (IMG-Xaviers), Bandra Sangeet Sabha, Vinayakrao Patwardhan Birth Centenary Festival - Baroda, Kal-Ke-Kalakaar Sammelan (where she was awarded Sur-mani title), Ustad Faiyaz Khan Jayanti - Baroda etc.
Her artistic expression is not limited to music alone. A Diploma holder in Textile Designing (merit-holder) from Sophia College, Neha comes up with imaginative designs through her talent and specialisation in hand-painting on fabrics. |
